Volunteer Income Tax Assistance

Interested in having your tax return prepared for free?

Call 2-1-1 and ask for information on the Best Coalition!

The Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) is a special credit for lower income workers to reduce their federal income tax.  Those who qualify will owe less and may be eligible for a larger refund.  If you worked during 2014 and your household income was less than the figures in the table below, you may be eligible for a significant refund -- in some cases, more than $6,100!

FREE Tax Preparation!

The BEST Coalition hosts a number of IRS Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) sites across the Dan River Region to help you have your taxes prepared for FREE. With the help of trained, IRS-certified volunteers, BEST VITA sites offer free tax preparation and electronic filing for families making less than $53,000. In addition to tax preparation, VITA volunteers inform taxpayers of special tax credits for which they may qualify and community resources that could be of assistance.

Most BEST VITA sites operate by appointment only and taxpayers are asked to call ahead to schedule appointments.
